Which MacBook should you buy?

MacBook Air is the right laptop for most people. It is fanless and silent, and the M5 chip is more than enough for school, office work, photo editing and light video.

Choose between the 13- and 15-inch Air on screen size and weight alone — the chip is the same family. The 15-inch is the better desk machine; the 13-inch is the better bag machine.

MacBook Pro 14-inch is for sustained heavy work: it has a fan, so long exports and compiles don’t slow down, plus a brighter mini-LED display with ProMotion, and HDMI and SD card slots.

MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro is for professional video, 3D and large-codebase work. If you are asking whether you need it, you probably don’t.

MacBook price questions

What is the cheapest MacBook right now?

MacBook Air (13-inch, M5, 16GB/512GB) at $1149.00 from Amazon, as of our check on Oct 26, 2026. The tables above have every model and retailer.

Is the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro better value?

The Air, for most people. The Pro’s advantages — a fan for sustained performance, a better display and more ports — matter for professional workloads, not for everyday use.

Where is the cheapest place to buy a MacBook?

It changes. Amazon and Best Buy discount MacBooks most often, and Apple’s own store sells at list. The table for each model shows who is lowest as of our last weekly check.

Does Target sell MacBooks?

No — Target does not carry MacBooks, which is why it is not in these tables.

How we check these prices

Every price on this page was read from the retailer’s own product page (Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart), and every page is re-read once a week. The date beside each price is the day it was last confirmed. List prices come from the manufacturer’s own store; struck-through prices are the retailer’s own “was” price, never one we worked out. Out-of-stock listings stay in the table, marked, and never count as the lowest price. When a page cannot be read reliably, the previous price stays up with its original date rather than being guessed.

We earn a commission through retailer affiliate links. Price and stock are set by the retailer, not by us.
